Title:  “Daphne”

Artist:  Tom Semple, Ellensburg, WA

Daphne was a character from Greek mythology which was turned into a tree by her father, in an effort to repulse Apollo.  Apollo had been struck by one of Cupid's arrows and was madly in love with her.  She felt the opposite about him.  Instead of being repulsed as Daphne grew bark and sprouted roots and leaves, Apollo became enamored of her new form.

I enjoyed the idea of this mannequin, originally carved from a tree into a tool to evoke an artistic response, once again reverting back into a tree, fulfilling that response.
